Much of growing up for farm kids involves the circle of life. Whether sowing, growing, and harvesting crops, or the conception, birth, life, and death of animals; we've seen it all. For us, most of it is normal, and it all provides adventure and education. Sometimes there is utter hilarity involved.
One memory that has stuck firm in my mind decades after it took place is the demise of one of our small herd of cows. It’s not her death, however, that makes the story memorable. There's hard work ahead for children and adults alike; problem solving is needed, as is trial and error; oh, and Grandad has a few surprises up his sleeve!
Experience it all through the eyes of the children as the family comes together to burn the cow.
